Well, there are seventeen types of Pokemon, each with their own particular advantages and disadvantages against other types. For example, a Fire Pokemon could easily defeat a Grass Pokemon but would have difficulty facing a Water Pokemon. Most Trainers tend to raise a team consisting of multiple types for that reason, but some only focus on one type in order to gain a more complete understanding of the nuances of that type.

I would be one of those people. My focus is the Ground type.

Yes, they do-generally, it's pretty obvious what kinds of powers a Pokemon will have, although they usually have some abilities that don't match up to their type.

Well, there's Normal, Grass, Water, Fire, Electric, Ground, Rock, Steel, Psychic, Flying, Dragon, Dark, Bug, Fighting, Ice, Poison, and Ghost.

Actually, that would be Water, though Normal comes in second.

...Then why is it called "Normal?" I'm sorry, I suppose I don't really understand.

I guess you can say it's the most "neutral" type. No type is weak to it, only two resist it, and it's only weak against one other type. It and Ghost are mutually immune to each other, as well. Furthermore, practically all Pokemon learn at least one Normal-type move, and for the most part, Normal-type moves aren't particularly flashy.

It's a little strange for me to think of elements-- types, I'm sorry, being strong or weak to each other, but when you put it like that, it makes sense. Are the ones that resist it... [...dragon is a type is weird and it's not flashy] one of them's steel, right?

I suppose you could consider them to be elements of a sort, but yes. Normal doesn't do very much damage against Steel and Rock.

Rock too... [A hum. That does sort of make sense, even if it's weird] Alright, I suppose that makes sense. So you said you specialize in Ground, right? What strengths does it have?

It's strong against Rock, Fire, Poison, Steel, and Electric. As far as resistances go, Poison and Rock attacks won't do too much damage to it, and it's completely immune to Electric attacks.

Or maybe there's some other passion-- but that might be too personal, it's alright if it is.

No, it's alright. I suppose you could say that I've just always had a certain affinity for them-it's a bit like realizing what your favorite food is, really.

Oh... I wonder if that's at all like- well no, you wouldn't be born with it the way benders are.

It... depends, honestly. In my world, humans are occasionally born with powers similar to Psychic-type Pokemon, and they usually specialize in Psychic-types. That's really the only case of that I can think of, however.

[...She should explain] In my world [...still weird to say] there are people who are born with the ability to manipulate the elements. They're called benders - there are ones for each element. Water, fire, earth, and air.

Ahh, so that's what all that is, then? I've heard a little bit about it, but I never really got a good explanation. That sounds... really fascinating, to be honest.

It is very neat. [She smiles to herself. She's a non-bender, but she's a pro-bending fan, it's only natural she'd be interested] A master bender's really a sight to be seen when they're in action.

Well, I know I'd certainly like to see that.

A bunch of the people I'm staying with are masters but... it's not really my place to ask them to demonstrate or anything.

Perhaps an excuse for that sort of thing should be arranged, then...
